1. What Does "Demat" Mean?
Demat stands for "Dematerialized". Decades ago, company shares existed as physical paper certificates that could be lost or damaged. Today, shares are held digitally in an electronic Demat account maintained by national depositories (NSDL and CDSL).
A Trading Account acts as the interface to buy and sell stocks on the NSE and BSE, while your Demat account acts as the digital vault where purchased securities safely reside.
2. Costs & Account Maintenance Charges (AMC)
Account Opening Fees: Leading discount brokerages (like Upstox, Angel One, and Zerodha) frequently offer zero account opening fees.
AMC (Annual Maintenance Charge): Many brokerages now provide zero AMC for life or zero AMC for the first year, making investing accessible to young earners.
Brokerage Charges: Discount brokers charge zero brokerage on delivery equity investments and a nominal flat fee (e.g., ₹20 per executed order) for intraday and derivatives trading.
